Find Market Demand Before You Build: Keyword Planner + Amazon Opportunity Finder
Most D2C launches are a product first and a market later. The reverse — demand first, product second — is the cheaper, faster path. Two free tools give you the answer in a weekend: Google Keyword Planner for search interest, Amazon Opportunity Finder for marketplace sales velocity.
Why demand first?
Building a store and creative for a product nobody searches for is the single most expensive mistake in D2C. Demand research costs a weekend; a failed launch costs months and a budget. The tools below don’t tell you if you ‘like’ the idea — they tell you if the market is buying, and at what price.
1 · Google Keyword Planner — the search-intent side
- Put your 10–20 candidate product terms into Keyword Planner (free with a Google Ads account, even with $0 spend).
- Look at monthly search volume for the head terms, but spend most of your time on the phrase and long-tail variants — “best [product] for [use case]” usually signals buying intent better than the bare word.
- Watch the competition/bid column. High bids mean other sellers believe the term converts — that’s evidence of paid market demand, not a cost to avoid.
- The number that matters is direction — 1,000 searches/month of clear-buying-intent beats 100,000 of looky-loo. Rank your ideas, don’t romanticize them.
2 · Amazon Opportunity Finder / Seller Central — the velocity side
- Amazon’s Opportunity Finder (Seller Central) surfaces categories, search terms and products gaining demand, with sales estimates.
- Check revenue velocity for your category: are top listings selling hundreds a month or a handful? Velocity is proof the market transacts, not just browses.
- Read the review count of top listings — high reviews with high sales = a defensible incumbent to unseat; low reviews with rising sales = an open door.
Reading both together
Keyword Planner says what people search; Opportunity Finder says what people buy. They’re different signals. The sweet spot is a product where search interest is rising and marketplace velocity is real but the incumbent is weak — that’s a market being served, not owned.
Demand research doesn’t pick your product. It stops you from falling in love with the wrong one.
Do this before the Shopify build, before the creative, before the first ad budget. Two days of honest research usually beats two months of optimistic building.
