Google’s AI-Mode Checkout Agent Is Live — What Ecommerce Should Prepare
Google’s new Business Agent lets shoppers chat with brands directly on the Search page as a virtual sales associate, already live for retailers including Lowe’s, Michaels, Reebok and Poshmark. It’s a preview of the shopper journey shifting from a browsing page to a conversation.
What’s live
Google announced a protocol for AI Mode checkout built around the Business Agent: on Search, a shopper can chat with a brand — ask product questions, get recommendations, and move toward a purchase, with the agent acting as a sales associate in the brand’s voice. Alongside it, Google published a Universal Commerce Protocol help page for merchants. Early integration partners are large US retailers; Indian and D2C rollout will follow the pattern we’ve seen with shopping surfaces — capability first in big markets, then broader.
Why this is the next battleground for D2C
This is the same shift we flagged for ChatGPT Ads and Meta One: discovery and decision are becoming conversational, and the ‘store’ is becoming an agent. Three implications for brands that sell direct:
- Your product data is the new storefront. An agent can only answer with clean, structured product data — accurate specs, price, shipping, inventory. Brands with messy catalogues will answer wrong, or not at all, while clean-data brands get the sale.
- Answers must be brand-owned. If the agent is ‘in the brand’s voice’, the incentive to feed it accurate positioning and answers is huge. The brands that define their own answer bank win the narrative; the ones that leave it to scraped data get a distorted version of themselves represented.
- Conversation is the new checkout. Agents that complete checkout in-chat change CRO from page optimization to conversation optimization — response structure, guided selling, upsell logic move into the agent’s hands.
You’ll soon be selling through an agent that reads your answers. Make sure the answers are yours.
What to do now
Don’t rebuild for a surface that isn’t in your market yet — but do the two things that make you ready: (1) audit your product data for accuracy, completeness and consistency, and (2) write the answer bank for your top 20 buyer questions, in your brand’s voice, ready to feed the next agent integration. That’s cheap, future-proof work with a current SEO side-benefit. When the surface reaches India, the brands already answering cleanly will be first in.
