Amazon and Flipkart Raised Seller Fees — Run This Margin Check Before Festive
Both marketplaces tightened seller economics ahead of the festival season: Amazon revised cancellation fees (Aug 17) and raised closing fees per order (Sep 7); Flipkart introduced a ₹30/₹60/₹90 penalty ladder for dispatch and cancellation failures (Aug 23). On thin margins, this is real money — here’s what to re-check before you scale.
Exactly what changed
- Amazon cancellation fees are now linked to order value (Easy Ship/Self-Ship), applying when the seller cancels for reasons other than a buyer request — or fails to ship within 24h of the estimated date.
- Amazon closing fees rise ₹1 for products up to ₹500 and ₹3 above ₹500, across FBA, Easy Ship and Seller Flex — citing higher fuel and logistics costs.
- Flipkart replaced account-lockouts with per-order penalties: ₹30 for a missed dispatch-by-date, ₹60 for cancelling after receipt, ₹90 if you miss the deadline and cancel. New sellers (under 3 months) are exempt.
The margin re-check
Fee changes move your breakeven, not just your costs. Run the new numbers through the Amazon margin calculator before you reprice or set festive ads:
- Recompute per-unit margin with the new closing fee and any cancellation exposure — festival spikes fulfilment errors, and each failure now has a rupee price tag.
- Check your fulfilment reliability honestly. The new penalty structure punishes exactly the states that already cost you: late handovers and avoidable cancellations. If your dispatch accuracy is below target, fix the ops loop before the ads, or the penalties eat the CAC savings.
- Update breakeven ROAS with the new margin — festive ad budgets priced on stale economics will quietly underperform.
The marketplaces didn’t raise your ad costs. They raised the price of sloppy fulfilment.
The pattern behind it
Both moves point the same way: the platforms are pricing reliability and profitability, not just volume. Sellers with clean fulfilment, fast dispatch and low cancellation keep margin; sellers running on thin ops get squeezed twice — once by fees, once by penalties. The brands that win festive season are the ones whose operations, not just their ads, are ready for a 2–3× order surge.
